Recovery Journey: A November 2023 Case Study Featuring Toby, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

December 11, 2023

This is Toby. He’s an eight-year-old Cavalier Kind Charles Spaniel. He came in to see us in October 2023 with a very sore right back leg. A physical examination and a series of radiographs diagnosed him with a complete tare to his cranial cruciate ligament in his right stifle joint (knee).

There are a number of surgical options available to treat a ruptured cruciate ligament, but the best option is a surgery called a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (a TPLO). This changes the shape of the knee causing the knee to be stable and fixes the pain and lameness caused by a cruciate ligament tare.

Our surgeons Michael and Greg performed a TPLO on Toby in November. His anaesthetic, surgery, multi-modal pain relief and recovery all went very well.

Eight weeks after surgery we’ve taken post operative radiographs which show that Toby’s knee has completely healed. He’s also walking without any lameness as you can see in the video.

If you have any questions around this case or this surgery, please give either Greg or Michael a call.
